Enjoy Craft beer? Here’s Why You Need A Growler

What Are Growlers

A growler is a large container that is used for the sole purpose of transporting beer. It’s designed to be air tight, to preserve the integrity of the brew, and can be made out of a variety of materials. If you are a connoisseur of craft beer, a growler is something you should definitely own.

Types Of Growlers

There are different types of growlers, and if you are considering purchasing one, there are a few distinctions that you should be aware of.

  • Glass. Glass growlers are most popular among consumers, and can be bought in both amber and clear varieties. Rule of thumb though, amber glass helps protect beer better, as it prevents UV rays from penetrating into the beer more readily. If beer is exposed too much it can go bad much faster. One benefit of glass growlers, is that they are easier to see into while filling. This helps prevent overfilling, and also lets you know if you’re running low! The only downside to having a growler made from glass is that can chip or crack if handled roughly or dropped, but if you take care of it, it can last you for years and years.
  • Stainless Steel. This type is quite popular in its own right, and is unlikely to break no matter how much you drop it. The steel also helps keep beer colder longer, so if it’s a long way from the nearest growler fill you won’t have to worry about your drink getting warm. This also makes them a good choice for camping, enjoying an outdoor concert, or even a backyard barbecue. The downside to this type is that you can’t see into it, so when filling be careful not to overflow it!
  • Ceramic. This type can be a bit harder to find, but when it comes to style they are definitely some of the most aesthetically pleasing. However, they do tend to be heavier, and like steel you can’t see inside. Additionally, like glass they can be prone to chipping or breaking if mishandled. Despite this, they can make a beautiful addition to any growler collection.

How To Fill Growlers

Growler fills can be found at many bars; however, not all provide the service. To find one you can either look online, or call up for favorite local spots. Often places that specialize in serving craft beers will offer the service, even if they don’t openly advertise the fact. Once you find a place simply head on in and tell them what you’d like! Once your growler is full you can take it home, or hang out for a bit.

The Benefits Of Growlers

If you’re not convinced yet, here are a few additional benefits to consider.

  • Transport. They are easy to take along anywhere you go, and even when filled aren’t overly heavy. Additionally, since they are designed to be airtight, you never have to worry about spills, and the beer will stay fresh wherever you go. This makes it the perfect way to take a cold draft with you without any hassle. This also allows you to bring home your favorite beer from the tap, so you can drink it anytime, or share it with your friends.
  • Brewery. While this one is dependent on the laws where you live, if you have a brewery nearby this is a good way to bring home their beer. A cold one straight from the brewery is as fresh as it can get, and if you can, it is definitely something to look into.
  • Kegs. If your old keg is running low and you want to crack open a new one, but don’t want to waste any beer, growlers can be used to store the leftovers. Doing this allows you to tap a new keg, while also having beer readily available.
