Hummus calories

Hummus is perhaps one of the most nutritious and versatile spreads and dips in the world, but many people may also think it’s boring. Plain hummus is fine when dressed up in a veggie-filled pita wrap, but on its own it’s a bit dull. However, there are plenty of ingredients that you can add to your hummus to make it interesting again, and some of these different types of hummus are even available for purchase at your local supermarket.

Whether you’re looking to get weird by adding chocolate to hummus or you’d like to make a roasted garlic hummus dip for the first time, check out these three awesome additions you can use in recipes with hummus:

Spices and Spicy Flavors

In order to avoid bland hummus, use ingredients that will add a bit of spice, or buy a spicy hummus dip that already includes them. In addition to seasoning hummus with a bit of salt and pepper, you can add everything from garlic and herbs to chipotle peppers and wasabi to give it a “kick.” These types of ingredients make hummus an ideal dip for snack time or for an event, like inviting friends over to watch a game.

Roasted, Toasted, and Sun-Dried Additives

The above words are ones you might see on labels for store-bought hummus, and you also might use them at home in an easy hummus recipe. Roasted red pepper and roasted garlic hummus dips are especially popular and typically use these oven-roasted ingredients. Roasted and toasted pine nuts are a common ingredient found in store bought hummus, and they’re easy to add at home. Sun-dried tomatoes are also popular in hummus spreads and add a great flavor that’s perfect for sandwiches and wraps.

To make roasted red pepper or roasted garlic hummus dips, make sure to chop up the ingredients, douse them in a bit of olive oil and/or spices, place them on a baking sheet, and bake them until they’re crispy. You can either use them on top of your hummus or blend them in when you go to make it.

Something Sweet

Those who have a sweet tooth will appreciate hummus with a sweet flavor. Most commonly, lemon is added to hummus to give it a bit of a tangy taste. However, you can add just about anything else to hummus. Cinnamon is a good choice for a simple recipe. There are even recipes for “dessert hummus” using cocoa, peanut butter, or other flavors if you search for them.
